Wild Oak Protection

There are many wild Oregon White Oaks growing across the city of Salem. By putting tree shelters over these wild oaks ensures that these oaks will be protected against human and animal predation.

Oak Planting

Oregon White Oaks will be planted on campus, at Zena, and around Salem. Planting around Salem is through our project partners and oaks donations to Salem residents. We will be doing two types of oak planting: direct and planting of matured oak seedlings.

Oak Tree Donations

Oak donations will be made to Salem residents to ensure new oaks are being grown on private properties. Any Salem resident who wants an oak will be given a free sapling grown from an acorn.

Fill out this form to request acorns to grow oaks yourself and or an oak sapling.

Political Action

Our project firmly stands with the ongoing issues of climate change. Oregon White Oaks are immensely beneficial in fighting the effects of climate change. We will continue to support and advocate for a climate action plan on Willamette University's campus and in the state of Oregon.

BIPOC Awareness

Planting young Oregon Oaks is a symbolic act that recognizes the settler-colonists history of White people damaging the ecosystem and disrupting the traditional patterns of land management and cultural life of the Santiam Kalapuya. Through our project methods we hope to honor the connection between the species and to those indigenous to this place. Additionally, many BIPOC communities suffer from the negative health impacts of fewer urban trees in neighborhoods. We will help address this by planting Oregon Oaks in the low-resource neighborhoods that are southeast of Willamette University.

Community Outreach

Creating awareness for this project allows the community of Salem to learn about the deep-rooted history of the indigenous people that once occupied the land. This project aims to educate the Salem community about the Kalapuya people and initiate an act of reconciliation that acknowledges the mistreatment of them and other BIPOC members in the past and present.
